Playwright Lloyd Suh, who has worked alongside translators of his own plays, says of the translation process that “the most notable lesson was about how much is left unsaid… The Bishop of Canterbury’s early speeches could just as easily be played for laughs as they could be played with intense sobriety and the high stakes of war… The entire play could be (and has been) performed as a rousing call to patriotic fervor. It could just as easily be (and has been) performed as a demonstration of the brutality and consequences of war. As a text, I love that it’s both.”

Lloyd Suh
Lloyd Suh (he/him)is the author of plays including The Far Country (2023 Pulitzer Prize Finalist), The Heart Sellers, The Chinese Lady, Bina’s Six Apples, Franklinland, American Hwangap, and many others. His work has been produced across the country, including at Atlantic Theater Company, The Public, Alliance, Huntington, Guthrie, Berkeley Rep, Children’s Theatre Company, Ma-Yi, NAATCO, and Ensemble Studio Theatre among others, and internationally at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and with PCPA at the Guerilla Theatre in Seoul, Korea. Awards include the Steinberg Playwright Award, the Horton Foote Prize, the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, and the Guggenheim Fellowship. A resident playwright at New Dramatists, he was elected in 2016 to the Dramatists Guild Council, and serves as a Professor of the Practice at Princeton University.

Andrea Hiebler
Andrea Hiebler is currently the Director of Scouting and Submissions at The Lark. Andrea first joined The Lark as an intern back in the summer of 2006, then served as Literary Associate for Playwrights’ Week before becoming a full-time member of the artistic team in 2009. She now manages multiple play submission and fellowship selection processes, writer scouting and tracking and serves as a facilitator for a variety of Lark programs and writers’ groups.
A New York native, Andrea graduated from The College of Wooster in Ohio with a B.A. in Theatre and English. She has participated as a script reader for Sundance and The Ruby Prize and hosted a series of affinity sessions on Dramaturgy/New Play Development at the national TCG conference. Away from the theater, you can find her listening to classic rock or rooting for her favorite New York sports teams at a local bar.

Henry V
Playwright Lloyd Suh reimagines the political intrigue and high drama of Henry V for twenty-first-century audiences.
Shakespeare’s Henry V is a play about nationalism, war, and how we remember history. Known for its rousing speeches and miraculous outcomes, the play has long had a life beyond the stage and page, its themes and rhetoric common points of reference in politics. In this modern translation of Henry V, Lloyd Suh has created a new interpretation that is distinctly his own while protecting the mystery of Shakespeare’s drama. Suh’s translation focuses on the actors and the staging, channeling the theatrical nature of Shakespeare’s play for a new audience.
