In July of 2023, the Play On Shakespeare team crossed off a big bucket list item: Traveling to London to work with Shakespeare’s Globe! As a part of the Globe’s Research in Action series, Play On was invited to present a live demonstration of the translations with the help of actors Sam Beckett Jr. and Polly Lister. Pinning 16th and 21st century writing side-by-side in front of a live audience, this event was a creative look at the relevance and resonances between Shakespeare’s plays and contemporary translations.

Following the demo, the Globe’s Head of Research, Dr. Will Tosh, moderated an audience-immersive panel discussion featuring:

Dr. Lue Douthit
President and Co-Founder of Play On Shakespeare

Migdalia Cruz
Playwright and translator of Macbeth

Ishia Bennison
Actor and dramaturg of Macbeth

Dr. Jonathan Hope
Professor of English at Arizona State University

With Dr. Hope seated in the audience, everyone in attendance was invited to pose questions, be in conversation with the work, and write their own translations in a public writing exercise. It was truly a gift to hear the voices of young students in the audience who resonated with the translations as an avenue for understanding Shakespeare.

One of the event’s highlights was the heartfelt and hilarious conversation between Cruz and Bennison about their journey translating the Scottish play. If you weren’t able to attend the event in person, fear not! Click the link below to hear a snippet of the live conversation that takes a deep dive into Macbeth.
