The Play On Shakespeare Method reveals Shakespeare’s dramatic structure demonstrating philosophical questions the plays address.
We work with both theaters and educational institutions to teach our method, explore charting exercises, and create a deeper understanding of Shakespeare’s texts using modern verse translation. With trained facilitators and using translations created by some of the top playwrights in the U.S., we are uniquely positioned to help you explore the plays and your relationship with Shakespeare. We also cater collaborations to our partners—read below for examples of available partner opportunities!

Testimonials
"I have not only learned a lot about Twelfth Night, but also how to look at a Shakespeare text, making meaning from it, and then translate that knowledge into a performance."
- Student, Ashland High School
"In this Play On Shakespeare experience, I learned a lot about what Twelfth Night actually is. I remember seeing a production when I was younger, and everything went completely over my head. Being able to know what the actual story is, and how funny it really is, was interesting. I learned a lot about Shakespeare as a whole and feel like I have more of an appreciation for his work."

Pre-Production Workshops
Play On Shakespeare offers workshops to institutions and theater organizations working on Shakespeare productions. Our workshops are catered to the organization, allowing us to help you create the best process for deepening your understanding of Shakespeare and making his texts accessible for your collaborators and audience. Workshops include a deep analysis of Shakespeare’s texts, facilitated conversations about the play(s), and provided resource materials.
Teacher Training Workshops
Our Teacher Training Workshops are catered for teachers and educators. It is a holistic immersion into the Play On Method—a unique process that explores Shakespeare’s text through translation, making the material more accessible for learners of all ages. The seminar-styled workshop, which typically takes place over the course of 3-5 days, includes tips and techniques in play analysis, translation exercises, and an opportunity to read and hear several Play On Shakespeare translations. Try It In Translation complements a variety of curriculums and is ideal for educators and practitioners in theater arts, literary studies, and Shakespearean performance.
Classroom Workshops
Our Classroom Workshops are designed to fit within the classroom period. These workshops are for high school and university/college programs. Over the course of the academic term, students and teachers will learn how to unpack the Shakespeare text using the translations and a charting technique with the goal of presenting a reading or production by the end of the term. Play On will supply the materials and teaching artists to guide students and teachers through the process.
